Dimitri Mellos was born and raised in Athens, Greece. He started photographing in the 1990s, after joining the Photography Circle in Athens, but later abandoned photography for several years. He started photographing seriously and consistently again around 2008, after moving to New York to pursue a PhD in clinical psychology.
His work has been exhibited in Greece as well as in Barcelona, London, Berlin, Lublin, Miami, New York, and elsewhere. It has also been honored with several awards, including first prize at Fotoweek DC in the Fine Art e-book category and first prize at the Palm Springs Photo Festival, has been a finalist for the Fotovisura Grant, the Magnum Expression Award, and the Renaissance Photo Prize, and has been selected twice for the American Photography annual.
Dimitri is also a member of the international street photographers collective VIVO.

This is his statement for this particular exhibition:

«I walk the streets of New York City and photograph strangers. Serendipity, random encounters, the conjunction of my photographic gaze with chance and happenstance: these are the elements that are essential to my approach. My understanding of photography as an aesthetic and ethical practice is premised on a fundamental respect for reality, an affirmation of the world as encountered.
These photographs are relics of a momentary merging of photographer and environment, subject and object. Immersing myself in the flow of the life of the city I feel the boundaries of my self momentarily become fluid, permeable. I abandon myself to the flow. The city brings us together, the city brings us apart. These are as much portraits of individual people as they are portraits of moments of being. Maybe they are my feeble protest against the city?s forgetfulness.»
