Philippe Gras


  • 1942: Born on April 16 in the 15th district of Paris.
  • 60s: Studying at the School of Graphic Arts, he works as a fashion photographer. First reportage for jazz concerts.
  • 1967-1982: He works as an independent photographer, focusing on modern creation (music, dance, theater), collaboration with the magazines Actuel, L'Art Vivant, Jazz Hot, etc.
  • 60s - 90s: Participation in many theatrical and musical festivals (Amougies, Isle of Wight, Saint-Paul de Vence, Nuits de la Fondation Maeght, Festival panafricain d'Alger ...), collaboration with the Contemporary Art Festival La Rochelle and the Autumn Festival of Paris. He also makes Mock-ups and illustrations for vinyl disc covers and CDs.
  • 1970-1983: Assistant or studio photographer alongside directors such as Alain Corneau, L? Lam, Jean-No?l Delamarre. He is one of the collaborators of two medium-length films devoted to musician Don Cherry and sculptor Raymond Delamarre.
  • 1988: Album with photos of the temples of the Angkor region (Cambodia) with texts by Michel Butor and Nouth Narang.
  • 1982-2007: Collaboration with the Agency for the Regional Development of Cinema. Articles and books on folk iconography and cinemas. Photographic series dedicated to the Paris subway, in May '68, East London, movie posters, tattoos, and more. Travels and makes reportage in Bhutan, Iraq, South Korea, Cambodia, Vietnam and Hungary.
  • 2007: Sudden death on February 22 in his home in the 13th district of Paris. Necrologies in the Le Monde newspaper and France Culture radio station.
  • From 2008: Exhibition L'?il Musical by Philippe Gras at the Cit? de la Musique and then at a number of cultural centers and festivals in France and abroad. Exhibition for Einstein on the Beach opera in Orleans, Montpellier and Paris. Budapest 90 exhibition in Paris, Budapest and Tour. Rock Ann?es 1970 exhibition in the city of Azuan.
