Sanja Marušić
Sanja Marušić (1991) is a Dutch-Croatian artist based in Amsterdam. She studied photography at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (KABK) and graduated with honors in 2013.
Since then, Marušić travels extensively to create otherworldly images. Her technique originates from photography with a shift towards painting and collage techniques, resulting in mixed media art. Through photography, she captures miniature performances in which a human figure (often Marušić herself in her own costumes), sometimes accompanied by someone else, mysteriously moves through a surreal landscape. The stories she creates often stem from her personal life. She manipulates her images, making the landscape and the moment itself more abstract, giving rise to a new world. She uses this surreal world as a form of escapism for both herself and the viewer.
Folk art and naive art serve as significant wellsprings of inspiration for Sanja. The distinctiveness and authenticity inherent in the unique worlds crafted in these art forms consistently fuel her creative process, influencing aspects such as composition, color palette, and intuition. The intricate blend of cultural identity, simplicity, craftsmanship and unbridled creativity found in these traditions sparks a creative spark within Sanja, guiding her in the harmonious interplay of composition, vibrant hues, and an intuitive approach to her work.
Marušić has created more than 15 series over the course of 10 years and has exhibited her work from Paris to Los Angeles, Madrid to Rotterdam. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam (2019) and the Mauritshuis in The Hague (2022). In 2023, Sanja was invited by the Dutch Photography Museum in Rotterdam to showcase her first solo exhibition, providing an overview of her work comprising 95 photos. The exhibition was on display for 5 months and received numerous favorable reviews.
